WHAT’S IN MY CAMERA BAG

I always love to hear about what gear people are using & more importantly HOW they use it. Everyone has their own shooting style…which is one of the things I love most about photography! Not all photographers use the same gear nor should they have to.

First of all you should know that you don’t need the best gear to take the best photos. You just need to know how to use your camera properly! But also, great camera gear can have an impact on your photos too.

Photographers shoot on different gear depending on their shooting style. There’s no right or wrong way about it. I like to stay close to whoever I’m shooting so I like wider lenses for portrait sessions so that I can capture the subject and also the setting. You have to stand pretty far back when using longer lenses so I mostly use those only at wedding ceremonies.

Canon 5D Mark IV (two of these)

Canon 35mm 1.4L

Canon 50mm f/1.2L

Canon 85mm f/1.2L

Canon Tilt-Shift 24mm f/3.5L

Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT

Gary Fong Flash Diffuser

Canon battery pack

Ona Camera bag

WANDRD Backpack

Ona Camera Strap

Rose Anvil + India Earl Dual Camera Harness

For portrait sessions I like to shoot mainly with my 35mm because it allows me to get a wide angle while also staying close to whoever I’m shooting. I always bring my 50mm along too but don’t generally use it. I also like to bring along my tilt-shift lens to get a few creative fun images with that. It depends on the session location and subject and also just how I’m feeling that day, but sometimes I will just use one camera and switch out my lens and other times I will use my double harness with two bodies. If I just use one camera than I bring along my Ona camera bag full of lenses, batteries and extra cards.

When I’m at weddings I will bring my Wandrd backpack full of all my gear and will use my double camera harness. I’d say for most of the wedding day I will have the 35mm on my right side and the 85mm on my left side. This allows me to have a wide angle for most shots and also a longer lens for further away shots. I use my 35mm for most of the day; it’s great for photos while getting ready, the ceremony, and reception dancing. My 85mm is perfect for vows, rings, and reception speeches. I like to use my 50mm too for getting ready moments and also tabletops and details. And I use my tilt-shift throughout the day to get some extra fun and artistic images whenever possible.

You definitely don’t need to go and buy the same gear that I have. Actually I suggest that before you buy anything, think about how you like to shoot and what your shooting style is. Determine what gear will help support you the best. Renting gear is a great option for trying things out before you purchase. Mostly remember…you don’t need the best gear to take the best photos, you just need to know how to use your camera properly.
