WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR PHOTO SESSION

So you’ve booked your photo session…now what in the world are you going to wear?!

There are a few things to consider when selecting outfits but there’s really only ONE THING that matters. The only thing that matters is that you are comfortable. That’s right! The way you feel in your clothes is the secret to how your photos will turn out! So make sure you choose an outfit that makes you feel bomb & is totally you.

Here’s some of my favorite tips for deciding what to wear to your photo session.

fail-proof formula

You guys, there’s an easy formula that works every time! Just put most of your family in different neutral shades (like ivory, gray, beige, etc) and then add in a pop or two of color. That’s it, I promise it works every time.

start with one person

I recommend starting with one person, most likely with mom because she is generally the person who wants photos and she should feel her very best! It works well to select something with color and print, like a long floral dress. Then you can work off of that and dress everyone else in coordinating colors.

coordinate but don’t match

The days of everyone matching in jeans and white shirts is long gone!! Instead focus on coordinating outfits by color, patterns and texture. Consider a color scheme that has one or two coordinating colors mixed with lots of neutrals. When selecting patterns consider one statement piece (like a floral dress for mom), add in one subtle pattern (maybe polka dots for baby), and then keep the rest simple with coordinating solid colors. Don’t forget about texture which adds visual interest to your photo (think chunky knits, tulle, lace, chambray, tweed, herringbone, etc).

avoid busy patterns and neon

Patterns are very appealing and interesting in photos but make sure to avoid busy patterns. It is best to stay away from tiny stripes and small checkered or plaid patterns which will be too busy for photos and take attention away from your face. Stay away from logos and other text on your shirts which can be really distracting.

When considering color it is better to choose the muted version and stay away from bright and over saturated colors. Bright and neon colors can add color cast to your face and skin tone. So if you wear neon pink you will end up looking neon pink.

plan for the weather

You will be more comfortable if you are dressed appropriately for the weather. If you are doing photos outdoors in the Fall then bring scarves and boots. If your session is in the summer wear lighter layers. And always bring at least one pair of shoes or boots for walking.

let kids have input

Your kids will be more excited for photos if they get to have a say in what they wear. Maybe you can give them a few choices and let them pick their outfit. If your daughter doesn’t like to wear dresses then don’t make her wear one. If your son thinks bowties are uncomfortable then ditch it. Happy kids make for happy photos!

be comfortable

Always and forever, my best advice is to be comfortable! Wear something you love and that feels just like you. Now might not be the best time to go out and buy a new outfit. You don’t want stiff new jeans or a dress you can’t sit down in. It is better to wear something that fits you well and is broken in. Be comfortable and wear something you can move freely in. The better you feel in your clothes the more relaxed, happy and confident you will be.

options and accessories

I love when people bring a change of clothing, it is an awesome way to switch up the vibe. You can change the style and tone of your session by easily changing what you’re wearing. Start with a casual look and then put on a more dramatic look. This is a great way to create more well rounded photos for your final gallery.

Accessories are an amazing way to create visual interest and movement in your photos. Brings hats, scarves, headbands, bowties or anything else that you love like an heirloom quilt. Stay away from watches and cell phones in your pocket.

hair and other details

Scheduling your photo session is a wonderful opportunity to have your hair or makeup done. You should feel your best and getting pampered is a great way to do that. But please never feel like you need to do these things. I always recommend to do what makes you feel your best, for some that is getting their hair done and for others that could be a morning walk or hike. Plus never underestimate the power of day old hair! Messy hair photographs much better than a slicked back hair style. For kids it is always better to have day old hair than a fresh new braid. Movement in your hair is what photo dreams are made of!

Remember the most important thing is to feel comfortable and to feel like you. Wear what you normally wear. Take care of yourself so that you feel your best. This is the secret to amazing photos.
